You and your child will enjoy 30-minute classes that meet once a week for 10 weeks.
You are your child's model; if they see you sitting and watching, they will believe that class is for sitting and watching. Please leave your inhibitions about your singing voice at the door! Relax and watch the magic that will unfold as you both engage in the fun.
Children are placed into developmentally-appropriate classes based on their age:
Infants Babies aged 0-12 months are in the passive stage of learning; everything must be done for, to, or with them. This class includes gentle bounces, activities that foster movement exploration, fun with percussion instruments like triangles, cluster bells, xylophones, and shakers, nursery rhymes that end in tickles, and lullabies accompanied by autoharp, guitar, or tone bells. Spend time after class exploring instruments with your baby, or making friends with another new mom as we sit in the circle. You are welcome and encouraged to breastfeed your baby at any time during class.
Toddlers 13-24 month-olds are transitioning from the passive learning stage to the active learning stage. They might insist "Me do it!" when you offer to help. This class is designed to encourage active, independent learning in the shadow of beloved grown-ups. Toddler classes include everything from the Infant class, and add finger plays, simple circle games, movement exploration, and simple songs. Parents often hear their child's singing voice for the first time in this class.
2-3 Year Olds In this class, children are fully engaged in active learning. Their minds are ready for make-believe play, and will be immersed in folk tales and games, with lots of singing along. In this class, we graduate from bouncing games to action songs, circle games, pitch exploration, and songs in which the class will follow the child's beat. We'll end class with a "Song for Listening," which helps them develop skills they'll need in school and beyond.
Intergenerational Classes Our Tuesday classes take place at Buckingham South, a beautiful assisted living facility on Abercorn Street. Residents there join our classes as "Grandfriends" and have fun singing and making music along with us.
