Three Weeks, Three Groups, One Musical – Annie!
This summer was anything but quiet at DoReWe. While most school bags were taking a well-deserved break, the beautiful surroundings of Mekinje Monastery were filled with singing, music, dancing, laughter – and, of course, the famous call of “Tomorrow!”
In July and August, for the fourth summer in a row, we rolled up our sleeves and hosted our Summer School of Musical, this time featuring one of the most beloved children’s stories – an adaptation of the Broadway musical Annie.
And because we at DoReWe believe that music knows no boundaries, this year we offered three different sessions – held over three weeks and in different language combinations.
FIRST WEEK – ANNIE IN ENGLISH
From 6 to 10 July, Mekinje Monastery came alive with the English-language version of the musical. Children aged 6 to 13 spent a week immersed in the world of little Annie, her friends from the orphanage, and, of course, the strict Miss Hannigan.
The five days flew by. The participants learned songs, choreography, and acting scenes, while also discovering everything that goes into turning an initial idea into a real musical theatre production.
A special part of the experience was that the children not only created together, but also lived and spent their time together – as the English-language session was organized as a residential camp.
SECOND WEEK – ANNIE IN SLOVENIAN
The very next week, from 13 to 17 July, Annie spoke Slovenian. This time, we welcomed children who brought the story of little orphan Annie to life in Slovenian. Once again, the week was filled with singing, dancing, acting, and that special atmosphere that emerges when a group of children transforms into a true theatre ensemble in just a few days.
This week was truly special, as on Thursday, 16 July, we also took the stage at the Kamnik Home for Elders. Together with our young performers, we brightened the residents’ day with songs from the musical, while also getting some extra practice in ahead of the final performance awaiting us the following day.
Every participant brought something of their own to the production. One had a powerful singing voice, another brought incredible acting energy, and a third had an amazing sense of rhythm and movement. Together, they created a performance they could all be truly proud of.
THIRD WEEK – ANNIE IN TWO LANGUAGES
In August, we returned to Mekinje for a third session. From 17 to 21 August, it was time for a special Slovenian-English version of Annie, featuring songs in English and dialogue in Slovenian.
This time was particularly interesting, as both languages came together on stage. Through the musical, the children learned that it is possible to cooperate, create, and understand one another even when we do not all speak the same language.
And that is exactly what we love most about musicals. On stage, our differences do not matter. What matters is that we listen to one another, work together, and create something that none of us could have created alone.
FROM IDEA TO STAGE IN JUST FIVE DAYS
Although the final performance may seem effortless to the audience, an enormous amount of work goes into making it happen. In just five days, the children have to learn the script, music, choreography, acting scenes, stage blocking, and much more. But it is not simply about learning – throughout the process, the children also have to grow into an ensemble.
Each session was therefore a little creative laboratory. Some children stepped onto a stage for the very first time, while others already had experience with musical theatre. Some were initially a little shy about getting involved, only to confidently step into the spotlight at the final performance.
And then comes that moment. The lights go down. The music begins. The children step onto the stage. And Annie comes to life.
THREE WEEKS, MANY NEW FRIENDSHIPS, AND COUNTLESS “TOMORROW!”S
Three wonderful weeks are now behind us, with three different groups and three slightly different adaptations of the same story. Each one was special. Each had its own energy. And each left behind a whole collection of new memories.
But the best part of the Summer School of Musical is not just the final performances. It is also the rehearsals, the laughter during breaks, repeating the same choreography for the fifth time, the pre-performance nerves, helping a friend, making new friendships, and that feeling at the end when everyone knows:
“We created this together.”
A huge thank you to all our young actors, singers, and dancers, our mentors, parents, and everyone who was part of this year’s Summer School of Musical.
And although summer is almost over, there is one thing that still keeps us going:
Tomorrow, tomorrow… we love ya, tomorrow!
ANNIE HASN’T SAID HER LAST WORD YET!
And this is not where the story of this year’s Annie ends! The mentors who took part in the Summer Musical School now have an important and challenging task ahead of them: bringing together a cast from all three summer groups for a production of Annie that will take to the big stage in spring 2027!
The young performers are preparing for a full-length, approximately one-hour production of Annie, which they will present to a wider audience.
Once again, our summer workshop will grow into a real theatre production – with a bigger stage, an audience, and a performance they can truly be proud to share with the world.
We can’t wait to see what they create!
