DO RE WE NEWS

Musical-theatrical fairy tale "The Lion Inside"

On Saturday, April 22, 2023, as part of preparations for our summer creative workshops, DoReWe members gathered for a full-day music and theater workshop at the premises of Mekinje Monastery. We dedicated our time to singing, playing the piano, and sharing our passion for music.

The goal of the music and theater workshop was to prepare and perform the fairy tale "The Lion Inside". During the preparations, the children were divided into several groups where they could:

(1) play and improvise on the piano,

(2) learn different rhythms on percussion instruments,

(3) sing in a choir or as soloists,

(4) try their hand at storytelling, or

(5) create and paint the stage scenery

Lunch was provided by Gostišče Repnik from Kamnik. Macaroni never disappoints, and the children especially praised the delicious apple strudel. The beautiful sunny day allowed us to sing, play, and roll around outside in the meadow. Some even found time for soccer.

Before the final performance of the musical theatre fairy tale, the children dressed up in costumes, and makeup artist Ana painted their faces. At the end of the show, the children were visibly tired but rightfully proud of themselves.

FANTASTIC ADVICE

#6 How to maintain motivation for practicing and playing an instrument until the end of the school year... and beyond?

Towards the end of the school year, many children start to feel tired, and amidst all the activities, some of them may lose motivation for practicing and playing their instrument. Here are some practical tips for parents and our students on how to encourage oneself or a child to play:

1. MASTER SOMETHING NEW OR DIFFICULT, THEN IMMEDIATELY REWARD YOURSELF WITH YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE
2. CREATE A WEEKLY PRACTICE PLAN THAT IS SIMPLE AND ACHIEVABLE
3. ORGANISE A MINI PERFORMANCE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY AT THE END OF THE WEEK
4. MAKE A LIST OF PIECES YOU HAVE ALREADY LEARNED
5. MAKE A LIST OF PIECES YOU STILL WANT TO LEARN

SONATA FROM THE STREET

This is what Nada, a mother of two children who joined us for their first music workshop, wrote:

"When Helena invited our boys (5 and 10 years old) to the first DoReWe music workshop, we didn't know what to expect since they don't attend their music center and don't play any musical instruments seriously. Our ten-year-old even rolled his eyes a bit before leaving home, but when they arrived and were greeted by the drumming of various drums by the other children and one of the teachers, there were no more doubts that they would stay at the workshop. When us moms came to pick up our children after five hours, no one wanted to go home yet. Our zebras, tigers, lions, and other animals were full of inspiration from everything they did, and the boys even managed to play soccer on top of it all. They also really liked the surroundings of the former monastery in Mekinje. And 14 days later, they are still humming the song about the jungle and the sleeping lion. Thank you DoReWe for this experience."

This is what thirteen-year-old Ana, who joined us at the music workshop and has been learning piano for seven years at another music school, said:

"I had a lot of fun at the Saturday music workshop. As soon as I arrived, I saw a lot of new instruments that I had never seen before. Then we practiced and improvised on the piano and had a very good lunch. In the afternoon, we performed a show that was very entertaining. After the show, we played in the courtyard and had hot chocolate. The whole day was great, and I hope we'll have another workshop soon."
